ALL INSTRUCTOR CANDIDATES - PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY!
The Instructor course is about learning to teaching canoeing. It is not a paddling skills course. You will be expected to teach at the Introductory level but the Paddle Canada protocol requires that you to be able to paddle at one skill level above your instructor level. Therefore, you must be able to paddle at an Intermediate skill level before you take the Instructor coursel. Paddle Canada does not require you to have official certification in Introductory or Intermediate skills courses but they do require you to be able to perform the manoeuvers to their standards. Review the material for the Introductory and Intermediate skill levels below. The skills are divided into two blocks: 1) the paddling skills you will be expected to teach (Introductory Skills) and 2) the paddling skills you are expected to be able to perform (Intermediate Skills). The second link (#2) also provides resource material for potential Instructor Candidates to help you assess whether you are ready to become an instructor and to help you prepare for the course. If you are not comfortable paddling the manoeuvers to the standards described and shown, then please consider enrolling in the skills courses to bring your paddling abilities to the levels required.
As part of the Instructor course you will be required to prepare a lesson plan. This must be done before coming to Canoe School. You will not have time to work on the lesson plan at Canoe School nor does Pioneer Camp have the capability of printing your plans. You must bring 2 printed copies of your completed lesson plan with you. Below are videos and a sample lesson plan to assist you with this exercise. You will be required to teach both an on-water skill session and an on-land theory sesson. Your topics will be provided to you well in advance of the course. The earlier you register, the earlier you will receive your assignments.
